Whenever people complete the main storyline of a video game there is a huge sense of accomplishment, but also a feeling of, 'what now?' For a lot of video games, there is nothing else to do, with gamers having to move on to a new challenge, however when it comes to the Fallout franchise that is not the case.

As anybody who has played a Fallout game will know, there is so much going on that the game certainly does not end when the main quest has been completed, and that is especially true in Fallout 4, which is arguably the strongest game in the franchise. When the main quest for the game has been accomplished, there is still so much that can be done within the game.

Updated July 6, 2022 by Ben Jessey: Anyone who has played a Fallout game knows the main story is only a small part of the overall experience. In fact, some of the best things in the game are outside the main narrative.

So, when you've completed the main quests, there is still a litany of enjoyable things to do. This list intends to shine a light on the main ones. However, a few significant activities didn't make it onto the original version. Therefore, we've updated the piece to add them.

16/16 Play Around With Mods

Bethesda games are known for their outrageous mods, and Fallout 4 is no different. The game's fanbase has created countless mods of all different kinds. Whether you're looking to make Fallout 4 sillier, scarier, or more realistic, the modding community has you covered.

And after you've completed the main narrative is the best time to install them, as you don't have to worry about them ruining your story experience. However, be aware that you can't get achievements or trophies with them installed.

15/16 Earn Achievements Or Trophies

After you've beaten the main story, you will likely have a decent number of achievements or trophies. Yet, it's very unlikely that you will have all of them. After all, there is a lot that you're unlikely to pick up naturally.

Luckily, you can earn most of them after the main game is complete. And it won't be a short adventure as a few take plenty of effort to acquire. It's worth it, though, as not only do you get that satisfying sound of an achievement or trophy popping up, but you also get a reason to continue your journey in the commonwealth.

14/16 Follow The Radio Beacons

Radio beacons are something you will likely have encountered at some stage during your time playing the game. And you may be inclined to ignore them, yet they have an actual purpose. To find out the purpose of each one, you must follow them and see where you end up.

Some just let you know what has happened to a certain family, but others are major mysteries just waiting to be discovered. The latter ones will provide you with a bit of a challenge as they force you to conduct an investigation, and these can be a lot of fun.

13/16 Build, Build, Build!

Fallout 4 Building Settlement

An activity that many people often overlook during the main quest is settlement building. This is mainly because people want to just crack on with the action rather than taking the time to build things.

However, crafting and managing settlements is a lot of fun, and it really allows you to showcase your creativity in a way that nothing else in the game offers. It's one of the game's most underrated features and should be explored by everyone when they have the time after the story.

12/16 Complete All Companion Quests

The companions in Fallout 4 are vast and unique, with each one offering something completely different to the game. While they can all impact the main quests, they all also offer other missions.

Each companion has their own quests that are personal to their character. These missions provide a serious amount of backstory to the characters and help you understand them on another level. On top of that, many of these quests are very enjoyable and last long enough to keep you entertained for several hours.

11/16 Collect All The Bobbleheads

Fallout 4 Screenshot Of Bobbleheads

Finding bobbleheads might not be a priority during your first run through Fallout 4. Once you have accomplished the main quest of the game, though, going around the map to try and find every hidden bobblehead can be entertaining.

It's a task that's more difficult than you might realize. So, you will get a real sense of accomplishment after locating each one. Plus, the search will take you to parts of the map you may have previously missed.

10/16 Collect All Magazines

Fallout 4 Magazines

Magazines are another type of collectible that the game offers. These are just as tough to find as the bobbleheads. So, you will be forced to explore the commonwealth.

Not only is this incredibly fun to do, but it also opens up the opportunity for you to bump into other characters and start other stories. And finding them all is something certainly worth doing, as the detail put into them really is superb. You can then display them on a magazine rack!

9/16 Explore

This might not seem very specific or exciting, but exploring Fallout 4's vast map is worth doing. After all, there are so many interesting things to see and do.

In fact, you may be surprised how much there is to find as plenty of innocuous locations hold big secrets. Plus, there are many powerful enemies to be killed and useful items to be found. Attempting to see it all will take up plenty of your time.

8/16 Talk To People

There are tons and tons of characters that can be found within Fallout 4, and nearly all of them have something interesting to say. It is very unlikely that you would have bumped into every single character during the main quest.

Therefore going around the map and finding the different characters that can be spoken to makes for a fun objective. While not everyone has something good to say, many of the characters have tons of dialogue that can lead to more things to do.

7/16 DLCs

For those willing to get them, the DLCs are not part of the main storyline in Fallout 4. Therefore, there are plenty of stories for people to delve into if they really want to continue their Fallout 4 experience.

There are several story ones, such as Automatron, Far Harbor, and Nuka-World. While there are positives to each one, Far Harbor is arguably the best. Of course, the DLCs demand you to part way with some money to bring them in, but if you want to stick with the game, then these add-ons are a great method of doing so.

At this point, it should be known that any game made by Bethesda is going to be full of hidden goodies to find. This is why Fallout 4 is a game that can be played for an endless amount of time.

There are tons of hidden quests all over the place just waiting for people to find them. These quests are not always detailed, but they can be exciting and offer rare rewards, such as magazines and special armor, making them worth your while. It'll take plenty of searching to locate them all, though.

5/16 Survivor Mode

Fallout 4 Survivor Mode

Another idea for those who have completed the main mode is to try out Fallout 4's Survival Mode. As the name suggests, it is the most difficult version of the game and will take you to your absolute limits.

It makes some changes you expect, like making enemies tougher and you weaker. But it also does things like disable autosave, add fatigue, and force you to hydrate to stay alive. So, it isn't a mode for the faint of heart.

4/16 Replay It

There are so many options and avenues that you can go down during the main quest of Fallout 4. After all, it's a game where your choices really impact your experience. Therefore, there are plenty of reasons to play through the adventure a second time.

Best Settlements In Fallout 4, Ranked

Perhaps you want to side with other people, be eviler, or try a completely different build. Whatever changes you decide to make, your second run will likely be very different from your first. And it might alter your viewpoint of the main story.

3/16 Brave The Glowing Sea

The Glowing Sea is something that you have to visit in order to complete the main quest of Fallout 4. But that doesn't mean that you shouldn't return to it. The Glowing Sea contains multiple things to find that you likely will have missed out on during your first visit.

Of course, going to the body of water comes with its risks due to the high levels of radiation, but that only adds to the excitement. Just make sure you're prepared to face the dangers.

2/16 Quincy Ruins

Fallout 4 Screenshot Of Quincy Ruins

The Quincy Ruins is an area of Fallout 4 that you do not have to visit at all during the main quest. Therefore, unless you have randomly come across it, this could be a totally fresh area for you to explore after the game is over.

It's not just a random place either, as this is where the Minutemen originally came from, and their betrayers still inhabit the area. So if you have a serious alliance with them, then going to avenge them could be a fun task to do.

1/16 Try Another Fallout Title

If Fallout 4 is the only game in the franchise you have played, then heading off to purchase another one would be a great idea if you're looking for more Fallout entertainment. While the other installments of the franchise offer slightly different experiences, the core gameplay and ideology behind it are the same.

Anyone who enjoys Fallout 4 would likely thrive playing one of the older versions of the series. There's a reason that Fallout has built up such a strong reputation for itself, and that is all down to how good the games are. Therefore going to play another one is always going to be a good idea.
